HANDMAID\'S TALE ON
TOUR
Dacapo\'s CD release of Poul Ruders's opera The Handmaid's Tale was
recently praised to the skies in a review in The New York Times. It said
among other things that the Danish composer, in his understanding of the
potential of the genre, can be compared to Giuseppe Verdi, especially when
it comes to using opera for political and other messages: \"Ruders
found a grippingly operatic way to tell a story so loaded with polemics
that it might have crushed a lesser composer,\" says the respected
American newspaper.
It is also pleasing that the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen, has decided that
The Handmaid\'s Tale is to go on tour when the Theatre, in the period
11th-25th January 2004, goes to Washington to present Danish culture at a
14-day festival at the Kennedy Center. The Royal Danish Ballet, the Royal
Danish Orchestra and the Royal Danish Opera will all be represented when
the group of about 400 people travel to the USA, where besides The
Handmaid\'s Tale (to be performed twice), Bournonville ballets and Carl
Nielsen will be on the programme.
The Handmaid\'s Tale has been recorded by Dacapo in cooperation with
Danmarks Radio and the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen.
