Baroque violin dynamo - Wallfisch - tours with triumphant orchestra

SYDNEY, PERTH and DARWIN - October/November

Fresh from a triumphant tour of Europe finishing at the London Proms and being awarded the Best Classical ARIA Award for 2001, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra will tour three states of Australia with expatriate baroque violin dynamo Elizabeth Wallfisch - October/November 2001.

One of the most engaging and charismatic musicians that you’ll see on any world stage, Wallfisch has been described as the dream of every conductor…”completely conquering the musicians, each one
of them with her charm. The result was acknowledged by each player - to make music is great fun.”

Nuam Ben Zeel/Haaretz, Israel (Jan. 2001)

There are many Australians who are leaders in the world in their chosen field. Whether in the pool, in the lab, or at the canvas, there is often something beyond their prowess which makes them loveable and compelling characters. While many Australians may be surprised to know that we have produced one of the world’s leading and most-respected baroque violinists, it won’t be any surprise to learn that she is brings these special qualities to her performances.

It will be a joy for musicians of the orchestra and the audience alike when Paul Dyer welcomes Australian-born baroque violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch to perform with the Brandenburg in October and November. Audiences are not only guaranteed of a great time, but also music-making of the highest order during the concerts of German baroque music in Sydney, Perth and Darwin.

Paul Dyer recently invited the UK-based Elizabeth, a good friend of the Brandenburg, to perform with the Orchestra for its debut BBC Proms concert in London’s celebrated Royal Albert Hall. Paul Dyer said: “ I felt that this prestigious musical event should be a celebration of how far period instrument performance in Australia has come. As an expat Australian and a world leader in our field, I knew Elizabeth would bring her unique flair and vitality to this special night.”

On the forthcoming tour, two highlights will undoubtedly be the concertos by JS Bach. Paul Dyer has wanted to program the Violin Concerto in D minor for some time: “The concerto was written originally for harpsichord and Bach reconstructed it for violin. As a harpsichordist, this is a treasured part of my repertoire and I felt protective of it. But I couldn’t think of anyone more musically perfect to play this version. Elizabeth has the colour, rhythmic drive and understanding of the dramatic Bach to wow the audience in this great work.”

In the Concerto for Three Violins, strings and continuo, Elizabeth will be partnered by Concertmaster Lucinda Moon and Associate Concertmaster Marina Phillips. Paul Dyer is excited about bringing together these three marvelous personalities: “What better trio could we find for this piece?”

"...[Wallfisch's] is playing of touching beauty in the slow movements and infectious energy elsewhere”

Gramophone, Awards Issue 1996

“Concertmaster Elizabeth Wallfisch intoned her stop-and-start solos in the finale with unconcealed glee. No wonder that at the end [Bruno] Weil shook his fists in triumph at the players.”
